The team of astrophysicists and geochemists presents new evidence that the Earth is not unique. The study was published in the journal Science on Oct. 18. "We have just raised the probability that many rocky planets are like the Earth, and there's a very large number of rocky planets in the universe," said co-author Edward Young, UCLA professor of geochemistry and cosmochemistry. The scientists, led by Alexandra Doyle, a UCLA graduate student of geochemistry and astrochemistry, developed a new method to analyze in detail the geochemistry of planets outside of our solar system. Doyle did so by analyzing the elements in rocks from asteroids or rocky planet fragm...

Ridgecrest Quake (27 yrs after Landers)

Image
27 years after one 7.2 earthquake Ridgecrest Quake as geologists call it, the severest after Mag 7.2  The 1992  Landers earthquake  occurred on June 28 with an epicenter near the town of  Landers ,  California , about 40 miles North of Los Angeles in San Fernando Valley The Ridgecrest Earthquake Sequence began with a magnitude 6.4 foreshock on July 4, 2019, followed by a magnitude 7.1 mainshock the next day with more than 100,000 aftershocks. The sequence rattled most of Southern California, but the strongest shaking occurred about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Los Angeles near the town of Ridgecrest Caltech, NASA Find Web of Ruptures in Ridgequest Quake A new study of Southern California's largest earthquake sequence in two decades provides new evidence that large earthquakes can occur in a more complex fashion than commonly assumed. The analysis by geophysicists from Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, both in Pasadena, California, docu...

Darkness

DARKNESS SURROUNDS US Darkness Surrounds Us: The Other 95% of the Universe All the material we can see is just a small fraction of the universe. The rest, a full 95 percent, is invisible and mysterious. These are the enigmatic dark matter and dark energy. While dark matter keeps things like galaxies together, dark energy acts in an opposite way – it pushes groups of galaxies apart and expands the universe itself. The astronomers are working to map the universe’s dark matter so they can see the effects of dark energy. The results could help us understand if the universe will expand at an accelerating rate forever

Saturn Surpasses Jupiter: 20 New Moons

Saturn Surpasses Jupiter: 20 New Moons Move over Jupiter; Saturn is the new moon king. A team has found 20 new moons orbiting Saturn. This brings the ringed planet's total number of moons to 82, surpassing Jupiter, which has 79. A team led by Carnegie's Scott S. Sheppard has found 20 new moons orbiting Saturn. This brings the ringed planet's total number of moons to 82, surpassing Jupiter, which has 79. The discovery was announced Monday by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center. Each of the newly discovered moons is about five kilometers, or three miles, in diameter. Seventeen of them orbit the planet backwards, or in a retrograde direction, meaning their movement is opposite of the planet's rotation around its axis. The other three moons orbit in the prograde -- the same direction as Saturn rotates. Two of the prograde moons are closer to the planet and take about two years to travel once around Saturn. The more-d...

Turkish / PKK (Kurds) Conflict Update

Turkish / PKK (Kurds) Conflict Update A total of 342 fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been "neutralized" since the start of Ankara's military operation in Northern Syria, Turkey' Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Friday, while Kurds announced that they have managed to kill 262 Ankara-backed rebels and Turkish soldiers. Akar's comments came after his meeting with top military officials in Turkey's capital Ankara, where he said "every kind of measures have been taken" in operation areas. Akar stated that the military operation continues "successfully as planned". The SDF in a statement released on Friday claimed that Kurdish fighters have killed 262 Turkish-backed militants and Turkish soldiers in the past two days, while they lost 22 fighters in addition to dozens of civilians. Another Shock and Awe in September 2019 (@ Saudi Oil Infra)

Image
21 September, 2019 The Yemeni drones operation on Saudi oil facilities that led to the largest ever disruption in oil markets has severely tarnished Riyadh's military capabilities and lowered the value of the well-known company, Aramco, in the energy market with a half-a-trillion dollar loss. The drones raids by Yemeni Houthi Ansarullah movement targeted Saudi Arabia’s key oil facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais on Saturday. The attacks shut down about 50 percent of the kingdom’s crude and gas pro duction, and cut the state oil giant’s crude oil supply by around 5.7 million barrels per day. A return to normal production could take months, not weeks. 61-year-old engineer Amin Nasser, the Chief Executive Officer of Aramco, leads the world's largest oil company with 76,000 employees. In a few weeks, he wants to bring it to the stock market, and the international financial markets are already waiting for it. In Riyadh one expects a gigantic market valuation of more than tw...

BiBi's younger brother Lt COL Yonatan Netanyahu was and is one of Isreali's hero. He was killed in action during Isreali's special forces' Entebbe airborne raid in Uganda. Netanyahu brothers (Yonatan was born in US and was a US citizen when he was killed) were raised in US during their father tenure as teacher for one top US university

AC, HVAC, MVAC and Refrigeration Systems & Food Protection

Hot, Humid and No Rain It is uncomfortable for all people. In Air Conditioning, We call it 'uncomfortable weather conditions'. Thats why we have air conditioning systems installed in offices, schools, banks and all that. In the beginning of the air conditioning era around 1900s, it is just simple called air conditioning, however in later times the subject had added features of humidification, dehumidification, ventilation (inside tunnels and UG places like in mines especially ), heating (especially in cold areas). AC, then HVAC, MVAC, basically the same thing, comfort systems for human. Refrigeration systems like coolers are essential for food protection such as drinks, meat and vegetables in tropical zones and in cold zones these days, outdoors and indoors. I have been to rural places such as villages and small towns during my free times recently, they are still not using coolers that are being utilized in city convenient stores, sushi grade meat coun...

Food Inspectors

Food Inspectors Food inspectors are appointed by city's health department. They sit in city's health department office. They know in and out of restaurants either local or foreign. They inspects new restaurants, existing restaurants that do not comply with city health codes, restaurant association rules and regulation and stuff. They check sanitation in kitchens, domestic water lines, backflow preventers, washing sinks, hoods, stoves, utensils, fire protection equipment such as fire extinguisher, emergency first aid kit, exhaust systems upblasted thru roof along the shaft, food storage coolers, walls, bugs especially cockroaches, lighting in kitchen (because bugs grow in damp and dark places). They also check ingredients of food you will be cooking, do you use ingredients (especially some seasonings) banned (by law)? How do you keep ingredients outside of coolers on floor in buckets such as salt, sugar, oil etc. They also check the cleanliness of grease hood, fryers if you...

Shapeshifters

Shapeshifters From Science Fiction to Reality, Really? With 3D solid NASA Designing Shapeshifting Robots for Saturn's Moons Mini robots that can roll, fly, float and swim, then morph into a single machine? Together they form Shapeshifter, a developing concept for a transformational vehicle to explore treacherous, distant worlds. In a dusty robotics yard at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the Shapeshifter team is testing a 3D-printed prototype of this unusual explorer. A contraption that looks like a drone encased in an elongated hamster wheel rolls across the yard, then splits in half. Once separated, the two halves rise on small propellers, effectively becoming flying drones for aerial exploration. These 3D-printed parts are only the beginning; the team imagines a series of up to 12 robots that could transform into a swimming probe or a team of cave explorers. The flying amphibious robot is part of the early-stage research program NASA Innovat...

Moonsoon

Moonsoon Rain Comin in with a full force Hit and Run everything in the way Drving by and falling back Taking everything away Moonsoon Moonsoon came from Arabic. Mawsin in Arabic is 'Season'. Moonsoon is to mark the rainy season in SE Asia. Monsoons are large-scale sea breezes. Moonsoon season in Myanmar lasts 5 months normally (now is 4 months) between end of May to end of October (that was 30 years ago before the climate change) How desert nomads introduced the word Asiatic Moonsoon to us? Arabs were very early seafarers such as Phoenicians (now Lebanon), then Vikings (Scandinavians), Chinese, Portugese, Spanish, British and US, one naval power after another followed this rough sequence. I have several Filipinos friends, they have Arabs blood in their DNA

Gays in LA

Gays in LA Not Too Long. Less Than 30 Years Ago In the beginning, homosexuals are called gays It emerged with a sonic boom during the big time HIV/AIDS epidemic era, LA riots in Koreatown in South Central LA Same time I was working in LA early1990s for Company dealing with Movie Agents, Movie Companies, Studios big, medium and small inside the triangle of the Strip, in West HollywoodWH, in BH, all the way up Hollywood hillsHH and in Los Angeles area with the radius of 70 m iles operating area. US is the only country in the world at that point and this point still using English Imperial System (Foot/Pound/Second) officially and strictly NOT French Metric System (CGS). Even British are using Metric now Back to the story, I noticed that early 1990s, there was one pickup point on Santa Monica Blvd on the edge of Hollywood and LA, guys in ties and suits picking up young boys on a regular basis. Boys were hanging out roller skating and all that, stay there the whol...

Legendary Bird "Hinn Thar"

Image
NO THEY NEVER BEEN ONE OF US According to Hantharwaddy Dynasty era stories, HinnThar (Ruddy Shelduck -Tadorna Ferruginea) birds are famous for faithful to each other. One bird die, the other dive high from sky head on to ground to commit suicide by showing faith Ruddy Shelduck is a waterbird, breeds in central Asia, Siberia and migrates in winters The Ruddy shelduck, a winter visitor to Myanmar and India, is no sitting duck. They scale the mighty Himalayas when they migrate to India from the north attaining heights of 6800 metres. Can be found in Putao, Beikthano Old Town Inngyi (near Prome) during October to April  This is the first evidence of extreme high-altitude flight in a duck Because the ruddy shelduck are known to breed north of the Himalayas but spend their winters south in India and Myanmar we thought it was possible they would be making very high altitude flights during this journey The Ruddy shelduck is known as the Hinn Thar in Myanmar, Brahminy duck in ...
